　メールマガジン【日本脱藩のすすめ】の狙いの一つに、情報革命を迎えるに
あたっての心構えなり、準備を読者に促すところにあります。そこで、今回の
テーマは、前号で紹介した『How to read a book』を叩き台に、読書技術につ
いて述べていきたいと思います。

　It may be seriously questioned whether or not modern methods of 
COMMUNICATION increase our understanding of the world in which we 
live.（『How to read a book』　p.3）
　昔の新聞・雑誌・本といった紙媒体メディアだけの世界から、電話、ラジオ
・テレビが次々に誕生し、現在はインターネットが破竹の勢いで普及している
時代です。これだけ多くの情報入手手段があると、情報の洪水に翻弄されてい
るだけの人が多いのではないでしょうか。情報量が飛躍的に増加し、情報入手
の方法が多角的になったとはいえ、必ずしもそれが物事をより深く洞察する眼
力を身につけられるというわけではありません。ですから、次のようなことが
言えるわけです。

　Indeed, the very ways we use to send and receive information almost 
makes it unnecessary for us to think.（p.3）
　つまり、より多くの情報に接することは、必ずしも“考える”ということに
はならないようです。ここで、日本語の“考える”と英語の“think ”とはイ
コールにはなりませんので、注意してください。英英辞典でthink の定義を確
認してみてください。


　さて、本題に入ります。最初に、読書技術には四つのレベルがあるというと
ころから話に入りたいと思います。

　The first level of reading is learned in the first years of school, 
when the basic reading skills are taught. We call this elementary, or 
beginning reading. At this level, the question asked of the reader is,
"What does the sentence say?" Such a question could be very difficult.
We mean it here, however, in its simplest sense.
　Almost everyone who reads this book will have learned the basic 
skills of reading some time ago. Nevertheless, we continue to have 
probles at this level of reading, for example, when we want to read 
something that is written in a foreign language that we do not know 
very well. Then, our first effort must be to recognize, or discover 
the meaning of, the actual words. Only after recognizing them 
individually can we begin to try to understand them in a sentence.

　海外の雑誌・新聞を読むための第１レベルは、辞書を使わなくてもある程度
スラスラと読めるレベルを目指さねばなりません。当メールマガジンは英語学
習のメールマガジンではありませんので、英語学習についての話は割愛させて
戴きます。
　ただ、一言述べさせて戴きます。それは、巷には『英語雑誌・新聞の読み方
』といったハウツー本がたくさんあるものの、肝心なのは、出来るだけ大量の
英語を読むということに尽きます。学問に王道はありません。頑張ってくださ
い。

　  The second level of reading concerns time.   When reading at this 
level,the student is allowed a particular amount of time to finish his
reading. Another way to describe this level of reading, which we will 
call INSPECTION AL reading, is that its aim is to discover as much as 
possible about a book within a period of time---usually a rather short
period of time, and always too short a period of time to discover 
everything that is in the book.
　When reading at this level, your aim is to examine the general 
qualities of the book, to learn everything that these qualities alone
can teach you. That is often very much.（p.12）
　辞書無しで読める段階に進んだら、第２レベルは、英書の速読です。この第
２ステップも割愛させて戴きます。第２レベルを目指す方は、当メールマガジ

　The third level of reading we will call ANALYTICAL reading. It is 
more difficult than either of the two levels already discussed. Third-
level reading is complete reading, or good reading---the best and most
 complete reading that is possible in a limited amount of time, then, 
analytical reading is the best and most complete reading that is 
possible in an unlimited amount of time.（p.13）
　第３レベルです。これは、次回から具体的な方法を述べていきます。

　The fourth level of reading is SYNTOPICAL, or comparative, reading. 
0n this level, the reader reads not one, but many books, and places 
them in relation, one to the other, and to particular subject, until 
he has a complete understanding of that subject. Syntopical reading is
 the most active and effortful of all levels of reading.（p.13）
第４レベルは第３レベルの後にふれたいと思います。
