　前号で、英語の新聞や雑誌がスラスラ読めるという第１レベル、速読が出来
る第２レベルの話をしましたが、今回は批判的読書（第３レベル）について述
べていきます。

　最初に 、『How to read a book』で述べているanalytical readingについて
の概要をお伝えします。詳細は、実際に『How to read a book』を読んで戴き
たいと思います。

●Rules for discovering what a book is about
1. Classify the book according to kind and subject.
2. State briefly what the whole book is about.
3. List its major parts in their order and relation, and outline these
   parts as you have outlined the whole.
4. State the problem, or problems, that the author has tried to solve.

●Rules for discovering what the author is saying, and how he is say-
  ing it
5. Find the author's terms, and discover their meaning.
6. Find the important sentences, and discover the propositions they 
   contain.
7. Locate the author's argument by finding and joining together the 
   sentences that contain the propositions.
8. Determine which of his problems the author has solved, and which he
   has not.
 
●Rules for criticizing a book
9. Be sure that you understand the book before you criticize it.
10. If you disagree with an author, disagree reasonably.
11. State good reasons for any critical judgment that you make.

●Judging the author's completeness
12. Show where the author is uninformed.
13. Show where the author is wrongly informed.
14. Show where the author's reasoning is weak.
15. Show where the author's analysis is incomplete.

　以上の中で、インテリジェンス力を磨くのに最も重要なのが、批判的読書法
、すなわち Critical reading です。
　具体的なcritical reading の身につけ方は、上記の●Rules for criticiz-
ing a bookを中心に各自実践してみてください。この批判的読書法のテキスト
が必要な方は、『How to read a book』以外に、『速読の英語』（松本道弘著
　プレジデント社）をお勧めします。
　日本語で、「批判する」といえば、「非難する」と同意義語にとらえるのが
普通です。 しかし、criticize とは、to judge or discuss the merits and 
faultsとあるように、欠点だけを見つけるということだけではなく、メリット
も見つける作業でもあるのです。それを念頭に批判的読書法の練習を積んでく
ださい。
　話は脱線しますが、ここで“書評”について一言。
　日本の新聞や雑誌には大概、「書評コーナー」なるものがあります。これら
の書評コーナーを時々読んでつくづく思うのは、いかにも日本的な現象だなと
いうことです。本来なら、“書評”するからには、critical readingしなけれ
ばならないのに、ほとんどが仲間内でお互いの本を誉め合うか、そうでなけれ
ば、本の内容からはずれて、作者の人間性そのものについての批判・個人攻撃
に始終しています。
　そこで、脱藩道場・編集部では、読者に本物の書評とは何かということを知
って戴くため、絶版になった『アメリカから日本の本を読む』（藤原肇著　文
藝春秋）の電子テキストを作成中です。完成しましたら読者の皆様にお知らせ
しますので、これを読み、本当の書評とは何かということについて知ってくだ
さい。ちなみに、同じ著者の『脱ニッポン型思考のすすめ』（ダイヤモンド社
）の電子テキストが完成しています。脱藩を志す方には欠かせない本ですので
、これも是非一読ください。

　最後に、究極的の読書技術である統合読書法、すなわちSyntopical（第４レ
ベル）について、『How to read a book』から概要を抜き書きしておきましょ
う。

●Find the parts of the books that are important for your needs.
●Decide what terms will be used.
●Provide propositions for your subject.
●Explain the issues.
●Analyze the discussion
